BETSY DIDNâT MIND that Lonny asked her to paint fences again the next day. Her arms and shoulders were achy, but not too badâworking as a waitress was an excellent way to get into shape for a variety of activities. It also helped that sheâd spent her previous Saturday helping at a car-wash fundraiser for the townâs safe-and-sober program for teens. You needed elbow grease to remove bug splat from the windows of several dozen pickups.
She started painting with gusto.
Everything was going great. The magazine had bought an article sheâd written about Shelton and the upcoming rodeo, and a second that would be about rodeo week itself. A payment had been deposited in her checking account yesterday, so now she could have the van repaired without waiting any longer. Sheâd already driven itâcoughing and wheezingâto the mechanic.
A few minutes later Grant showed up, carrying a second bucket. She admired the way he lugged the thing without any trouble, the muscles bunching over his shoulders.
âOh, hi,â Betsy said casually, ignoring the heavy thumping of her heart. A veterinarian didnât have any business being so delicious. âI didnât know you were coming back today.â
âI couldnât let you do the rest of the fence by yourself.â
His easy smile didnât fool her. Theyâd chatted off and on the previous day and Grant clearly hadnât gotten over his discomfort with her mobile lifestyle. The look on his face when sheâd talked about skydiving...? He must have wanted any work assignment except one located near her.
âYou mean they asked if youâd be willing to paint again, the way they asked me,â she said in a dry tone.
âLonny claims I canât do any harm this way. He also says you get me to work faster,â Grant admitted. âBut Iâm happy to help and it canât be fun painting alone.â
Betsy gave a noncommittal shrug. Being alone didnât bother her. Neither did spending time with people. Surely one of the keys to happiness was the ability to be content within yourself.
âIâve been thinking about the rodeo grounds,â she said after theyâd worked for a while. âThe town owns this property, right? And it isnât being used for anything except the rodeo.â
âSure. What about it?â
âIâm not criticizing. Itâs just that taking everything down and putting it back up again seems a lot of effort. Itâs no skin off my nose. Iâm having fun helping out. But why donât they make a permanent facility? You know, with more substantial structures and that kind of thing?â
Grant gestured to the people working around them. âTake a look. Everyone else is having fun, too. Winters are long here. And hard. Getting ready for rodeo week is a time to come together and catch up.â
The concept of community building had sounded silly when Betsy learned about it in college. Theyâd done contrived exercises that hadnât changed a thingâin the end, they were still students with tests and lives outside the lecture hall, and they were still competing with each other for grades and recommendations.
